Please Note : This is a hybrid role, and the successful candidate is expected to work from the Southern Company Corporate Headquarters in Atlanta a minimum of 4 days per week.
JOB SUMMARY:
Southern Power has a dedicated Lease Administration team responsible for management of our growing lease portfolio. The team oversees all accounting, payment obligations, and landowner relations for leases which requires collaborating closely with landowners, Southern Power Legal, and Southern Power Project Development. Each person on the team has routine responsibilities and assignments across multiple lease portfolios.
The Accounting Team Leader position will serve as lead accountant of the Southern Power Lease Administration team and will report to an Accounting Manager. This role will provide oversight and approval of month-end journal entry processing, balance sheet reconciliations, lease payment obligations, and landowner data changes. The Team Leader will also be the primary performer for new lease abstraction and portfolio setup within the lease administration and accounting software application, CoStar Real Estate Manager (“CoStar”), as well as the primary contact for lease-related financial data requests, audit inquiries, and financial reporting support.
Job Responsibilities:
Performing set-up of all new leases and validation of lease data and attributes. This includes abstracting/gathering, verifying, and inputting data into CoStar
Performing reviews of monthly lease journal entries, account reconciliations, and other financial data
Approving lease payments(monthly, quarterly, and annually) and assisting with unclaimed property research
Developing/updating ad hoc reports and forms as needed to support routine activities, accounting needs, and financial reporting needs
Gathering necessary data to support SEC lease disclosures, partnership reporting needs, tax data requests, budget preparation, and audit data requests
Creating and maintaining procedural documentation and training materials to support existing or newly established procedures
Serve as a subject matter expert for all lease agreements, data, and the related software (CoStar)
Providing guidance, performance evaluations, and mentoring to the Lease Administration team and assisting wherever needed
Assisting the organization with other quarterly and annual internal control processes
Job Requirements:
Education
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, real estate, or a related field is required
Advanced degree in accounting or a related field is a plus
CPA license (or equivalent) is a plus
Experience, Knowledge, and Skills
2+ years of experience in lease administration, lease accounting, or a similar role is required
Prior supervisor experience providing performance evaluations and mentoring staff is preferred
The ability to abstract, interpret, and administer complex lease documents is critical
A strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, especially ASC 842, and the ability to conduct financial analysis related to leases is required
Experience using Oracle ERP accounting software is highly desirable
Proficiency with lease administration and accounting software such as CoStar is highly desirable
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite applications, especially Excel, is required
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills is required
Ability to work in a fast-moving environment and manage multiple priorities is required
Effective communication and people skills, capable of conveying financial information to non-financial colleagues and landowners, with the ability to collaborate with diverse teams is required
Meticulous with an elevated level of accuracy and the ability to detect inconsistencies in data is required
Ability to manage time effectively and work to tight deadlines is required
Excellent analytical, organizational, and critical thinking skills are necessary
