Job Summary:
The Engineering Technician manages all correspondence related to public improvement projects impacting Atlanta Gas Light and Chattanooga Gas Company infrastructure. The position will be responsible for interpreting highway plans, engaging engineering design resources, and keeping public agencies informed of infrastructure relocation schedules. This role will also design and prepare timely, safe and cost-effective natural gas infrastructure improvement plans including system replacements, relocations due to state, municipal, and private entity construction conflicts, system reinforcements, and system expansions. The incumbent also coordinates customers' requirements with the various departments and other prevailing authorities.
Functional Expertise:
Serve as a general point of contact for engineering consultants performing utility investigations and design work
Communication of utility relocation processes to external entities
Provide quality control of geospatial data and mapping products
Research facility records in GIS and project as-builts
Business Acumen:
- Analyze construction proposals for DOT, municipal, and private projects for conflicts with existing gas utilities and propose recommendations to resolve conflicts
Engagement:
Serves as primary liaison between the Company and transportation agencies
Collaborates with engineers, construction, and operations to produce effective drawings
Collaborates on facility relocations with outside parties including county, municipal and state government representatives, road contractors and developers
Meet and negotiate with city and state officials, engineers, and construction contractors to resolve conflicts in a timely manner and relay Company policy, procedure, and other information relative to the gas industry
Driving Results:
Create construction designs using MicroStation, AutoCAD, GIS and other applications
Monitors projects to ensure on-time delivery of plans to state, county and municipal authorities. Manage written correspondence relating to extensions, delays, and waivers
Create internal project tracking numbers for design purposes and prepare internal documents
Ensure that compliance with all engineering principles, gas operating standards, local code, state and federal rules, regulations, mandates and statutes is maintained by preparing and/or revising designs as necessary for all gas facilities installed
Education and Experience:
Required:
BA/BS year degree or 3 years work related experience
Knowledge of natural gas distribution system facilities
Preferred:
• Some level of GIS, engineering, or technical education or experience
Or
Equivalent academic education and experience
Skills:
Required:
Drafting ability – advanced proficiency
One or more industry standard CAD Packages (MicroStation, AutoCAD, TurboCAD etc) – advanced proficiency
Work Prioritization – advanced proficiency
Ability to read, interpret and apply engineering and architectural plans – intermediate proficiency
Excellent interpersonal communication skills
Mathematical aptitude – intermediate proficiency
Proficiency with variety of GIS concepts, practices, and procedures
MS Excel - intermediate proficiency
MS Word - intermediate proficiency
MS PowerPoint - intermediate proficiency
ArcGIS – basic proficiency
Certifications/Licenses:

The incumbent works in an office environment.
The incumbent may/will be exposed to varying outdoor weather conditions.
The incumbent may/will be exposed to construction related activities
This position occasionally requires prolonged standing or walking.
This position occasionally requires the incumbent to reach above shoulder-level.
This position occasionally requires the incumbent to bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
This position requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
Local travel.
Keyboarding required in approx. 80% - 100% of daily tasks
