JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for operating street sweepers and related equipment in the maintenance and cleaning of City sheets, curbs, gutters, and public rights-of-way to ensure clean, safe, and attractive roadways.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Operates street sweepers and related equipment to clean streets, gutters, and paved public areas.
  • Performs daily pre- and post-operation inspections of vehicles, including checking tires, fluids, and equipment; performs minor repairs and maintenance as needed.
  • Reports needed repairs or equipment malfunctions to supervisor or maintenance staff.
  • Removes debris, dirt, and trash from streets, storm drains, and gutters.
  • Assists with other street maintenance tasks such as pothole patching, shoulder repair, and debris removal.
  • Operates other public works equipment such as dump trucks, light loaders, or small machinery when assigned.
  • Installs cones, barricades, and traffic control devices; flags traffic as needed to ensure safety of work zones.
  • Completes daily work logs, maintenance records, and other required documentation.
  • Adheres to all City, departmental, and safety regulations always.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies, weather events, and special projects as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  • Knowledge of City policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Knowledge of street sweeping operations and general roadway maintenance practices.
  • Knowledge of proper vehicle operation, inspection, and maintenance techniques.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining assigned equipment.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining safe work zones.
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in communication and teamwork.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and respectfully with co-workers and the public
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. Work is reviewed through spot checks for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of results.

GUIDELINES
Guidelines include City and departmental policies, safety rules, traffic laws, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require interpretation in specific situations.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The work consists of operating street sweeping equipment and performing related street maintenance duties. Inclement weather, heavy traffic, and debris contribute to the complexity of the work. The purpose of this position is to maintain clean and safe streets and public areas. Successful performance ensures the safety and appearance of City infrastructure.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects and uses tools requiring dexterity.
  • The work is performed outdoors and may involve exposure to noise, dust, dirt, grease, moving machinery, and inclement weather.
  • Protective devices such as gloves, masks, or goggles must be used as required
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position may have functional supervision over assigned personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required; Class A CDL preferred.
  • Georgia Department of Transportation Flagging Certificate preferred.
